OBD2 scanners can be used to read real-time sensor data from a vehicles ECU. The scanner may have functions for reprogramming as well as to read and clear trouble codes associated to the check engine light. OBD2 code readers are available as stand-alone units or may be paired with laptop and desktop computers as well as the iPhone or Android enabled smartphones and tablets.
OBD2 compliant vehicles are generally years 1996 and newer. You can check if your vehicle is OBD2 compliant by checking under the hood for a sticker that states the vehicle is OBD2 complaint or by locating the OBD2 port under the dash column.
